In June 2025, Muslims around the world will celebrate one of the most important holidays in Islam — Eid al-Adha, also known as Eid al-Adha. The feast of sacrifice has no fixed date, as it begins 70 days after the end of the holy month of Ramadan, which is linked to the Islamic lunar calendar.

In 2025, Eid al-Adha falls on June 6. The celebration will begin at sunset on the evening of June 5 and will last for three days.

In some Russian regions, where many residents practice Islam, the first day of the holiday is declared a non-working day. It is customary to visit relatives and pray for the dead.

Eid al-Adha 2025: customs and omens

The Eid al-Adha holiday appeared many centuries ago and has many traditions and customs.

Eid al-Adha in Arabic, and Eid al-Adha in Turkic, means "feast of sacrifice." It is established and celebrated in honor of the Prophet Ibrahim, to whom Allah sent a test — to sacrifice his own son. Both of them did not resist the will of the Lord and took it for granted. For his devotion to faith, at the very last moment, Allah gave life to the son of Ibrahim and accepted a ram as a sacrifice.

Eid al-Adha is a long—awaited family holiday, and they prepare for it very carefully. Muslim women keep their house in perfect order and cook many delicious dishes. Muslims greet each other on this day with the words "Eid Mubarak!", which means "Blessed is the holiday!" in Arabic.

The celebration begins the day before or in the early morning. After a complete ablution, you need to wear clean, neat clothes to perform the festive prayer. Then they read the Quran and listen to a sermon explaining the origin and meaning of sacrifice. And only after that they begin the rite itself.

One of the best animals is selected for sacrifice. As a rule, this is a specially fattened sheep. Animals that have flaws — thinness, blindness, lack of teeth — are not allowed to sacrifice. Places are equipped for the ceremony in each locality. If a Muslim is not present at the sacrificial ceremony for some reason, he can ask someone to sacrifice an animal on his behalf.

According to Islamic tradition, part of the meat of a sacrificial animal is given to the poor and needy. Many charitable organizations organize such distribution near mosques. The main mosques in Moscow where the holiday is planned to be celebrated are: the Moscow Cathedral Mosque (7 Vypolzov Lane, Prospekt Mira metro station), the Historical Mosque (28 Bolshaya Tatarskaya St., building 1, Novokuznetsk metro station, Tretyakovskaya metro station) and the Shukhada Memorial Mosque on Poklonnaya Gora (Minskaya St., building 2B).

There are also signs associated with Eid al-Adha. It is believed that if a sacrificial animal is slaughtered without flaws, and the meat is distributed with sincere intent, then the family will be well-being. A bad sign is a quarrel on a holiday or a refusal to help those in need. Believers also pay attention to the weather: a sunny day is regarded as a good omen.

Eid al-Adha 2025: what not to do

Muslims have strict prohibitions on holidays, namely you can not:

  • Walking around in dirty clothes;
  • Be stingy;
  • quarreling and doing bad things;
  • drink alcohol.

The meat of the sacrificial animal is distributed to those in need. Only a third can be kept for yourself to cook dinner and treat relatives and neighbors. In no case should you sell. Even the animal's skin is given away for free. If it is still sold, the proceeds go to charity.
