In early summer, Orthodox Christians begin the Fast of Peter. This is one of the four multi-day fasts of the year, which is also called the Apostolic or Peter's Fast. It occurs annually on the 57th day after Easter. In 2025, this date falls on Monday, June 16. The fast will end on Friday, July 11, on the eve of the Day of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. Izvestia tells us what prohibitions exist for believers during the Petrov fast and publishes a calendar of meals by day.

Petrov Post 2025: nutrition calendar by day

Peter's fast is considered one of the most gentle, since on some days it is allowed to drink a little wine and eat fish. This is a reminder that the Apostle Peter was a fisherman. However, meat, eggs, and dairy products, and even the dishes in which they were used, must be completely excluded from the diet.

The menu depends on the day of the week. For example, fish and seafood can be consumed on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, as well as on church holidays that fall on St. Peter's Fast. For example, on July 7, on the Nativity of John the Baptist, regardless of which day of the week it falls, fish pies are baked with fish fillings.

On other days — Monday, Wednesday and Friday — fish is not allowed. It is also necessary to exclude vegetable oil on these days. Fresh vegetables and fruits, dried fruits, grains, nuts and mushrooms are allowed throughout the fast. They can be used to make porridges, vegetable soups, salads and lean pastries.

In addition, there is a rule that if Peter and Paul's Day falls on Wednesday or Friday, then it is also considered a fast day. Although the holiday itself is not included in the Apostolic fast. But since in 2025 it will be celebrated on Saturday, July 12, there is no fast on this day. If it is difficult to keep Peter's Fast for health reasons, then it is better not to limit yourself to food, while maintaining your usual diet.

However, food restrictions alone are not enough to keep the fast. It is much more important to give up entertainment and entertainment events, devoting time to spiritual purification and prayer. Church-going people should minimize, and on days of strict fasting, even give up watching TV and using the Internet altogether.

Alcohol abuse is categorically unacceptable in the post. Wine is not prohibited during Peter's Fast, but it is better not to succumb to addiction and drink no more than one glass. Women are not allowed to do needlework, especially sewing. According to ancient beliefs, a needle can sew up not only a hole in a sock, but also all good things, attracting troubles into your life.

Quarrels, conflicts and any manifestation of negativity are also prohibited. Anniversaries, weddings, and other celebrations are not scheduled for this period. In particular, it is not recommended to borrow money.

During the period of Peter's fast, it is necessary to spend as much time as possible in solitude, repent and show compassion for others. All this, together with voluntary abstinence from animal food, helps to improve, purify thoughts, soul and body.

Earlier, Izvestia told how to leave the post correctly without harm to the body.
