Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever tried to dodge the question about frozen Russian assets and chastised the journalist for speaking English. This happened on October 16 at a press conference following the first day of the EU summit.

"I don't understand English, you should have asked me in German. Next question, please," he said, broadcast by NDTV World on YouTube.

De Wever changed the subject as soon as the journalist asked him to comment on media reports about US plans to use frozen Russian assets to resume peace talks. Then the Prime Minister scolded the journalist for not wanting to ask a question in German, calling her a "typical German."

As a result, Bart de Vevey admitted that "he says all this in order not to answer the question and think longer about what to really say to him." He stressed that now no one can "even dream" of using blocked Russian assets without a unanimous decision by EU leaders.

The head of the European Diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, said yesterday that the European Union has not yet developed a plan for the distribution of Belgium's financial risks in the event of the seizure of frozen Russian assets. According to her, a number of community countries are still in favor of withdrawing Russian funds. She noted that this idea remains relevant, but for its implementation it is necessary to agree on the distribution of possible financial risks with Belgium.
