Canada is discussing with the European Union (EU) the possibility of Ottawa's participation in providing Ukraine with a loan worth €90 billion. This was reported on September 13 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, citing sources.

"Canada is negotiating to support an EU loan for Ukraine, as the Prime Minister of [the country] Mark Carney seeks to strengthen transatlantic ties in order to reduce his country's dependence on the United States," the publication says.

According to the newspaper, Carney advocates the formation of a union of liberal states that support a multilateral system of international relations. By participating in the financing of the loan to Ukraine, he also expects to confirm Canada's commitment to European allies.

The Wall Street Journal reported on September 12 that the Canadian Prime Minister had taken the initiative to grant the country the status of an associate member of the EU, which could accelerate Ottawa's rapprochement with Europe amid the failure of trade negotiations with the United States. According to the newspaper, the EU, despite strict membership requirements, is ready to consider this proposal.
