Italy suspended Schengen with Spain amid migration crisis in Ceuta

Italy is temporarily suspending the Schengen Agreement with Spain amid a massive influx of migrants to Ceuta. The decision was made due to concerns about border controls. This was reported on July 31 by the newspaper La Stampa.

"The Ministry of the Interior has ordered the closure of the sea and air borders with Spain. The decision was made based on the latest information collected, analyzed, in particular, by the Committee on Immigration and Border Security," the article says.

The newspaper also reported that after a telephone conversation between Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and his French counterpart Laurent Nunez, an agreement was reached on the possibility of strengthening control on the land border between the two countries within the framework of previously signed agreements on police cooperation between France and Italy.
