KHL goalkeeper Alexei Murygin has died at the age of 39.

Alexey Murygin, the former goalkeeper of several Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) clubs, died at the age of 40. This was announced on July 31 by the press service of the Khabarovsk Amur hockey club, whose gates he defended from 2005 to 2014.

It is known that the cause of death was a serious illness of the athlete. In February 2019, Murygin was diagnosed with tonsil cancer, but he was able to defeat it. In May 2026, the disease returned.

"Today, the heart of our countryman, a graduate of Khabarovsk hockey, an excellent goalkeeper and a wonderful man, Alexei Murygin, stopped. In recent years, he has struggled with a serious illness, showing perseverance and indomitable character. Unfortunately, the disease turned out to be stronger," the team's Telegram channel says.

Colleagues called the athlete someone who was highly respected as a professional and decent person. The team expressed its condolences to all fans of Russian hockey and Khabarovsk residents, as well as Alexey's family and friends — his wife Ksenia, daughters Melitina, Varvara and Anisiya.

Murygin finished his sports career in 2023. He played 168 KHL matches for his native Amur, Sport-Express notes. The goalkeeper also played for Metallurg, Avangard, Lokomotiv, Neftekhimik, Torpedo and Kunlun Red Star (Shanghai Dragons).
