Cafes and restaurants in Russia may be required to provide visitors with drinking water purified from the tap for free, instead of offering only paid water from expensive brands. On July 29, Mikhail Delyagin, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Economic Policy, addressed Anton Alikhanov, head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the document is available to TASS.

"Sometimes the client is not informed that the institution basically sells only super—expensive premium brands of water, sometimes the waiter insistently offers to "drink at least some water" while waiting for an order, sometimes the order is unreasonably delayed while waiting for the client to ask for at least water, which then turns out to be "golden," the text of the message says.

Delyagin noted that in order to eliminate such practices that cause discontent among citizens, it is necessary to consider the possibility of obliging catering companies to provide visitors with free filtered drinking tap water.

According to the author of the appeal, the consolidation of this norm at the legislative level will improve service standards, reduce tension among the population and form a more positive attitude towards entrepreneurs. At the same time, Delyagin clarified that this requirement should not be introduced in those regions and towns where tap water is unsuitable for human consumption even after purification.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Center for the Development of Advanced Technologies (CRPT, operator of the Honest Sign labeling system) Mikhail Dubin announced on July 15 that Russian stores will be required to monitor product quality more closely from September 1 due to the introduction of automatic fines for the sale of expired goods. The control mechanism assumes that the labeling system will record the fact of sale at the checkout, bypassing the current licensing regime.
