The Russian Mountaineering Federation named the cause of death on Elbrus
The lack of proper planning and inadequate assessment of weather conditions caused the deaths of climbers on Mount Elbrus. This was announced on July 27 by Alexander Yakovenko, Chairman of the Commission on Classical mountaineering of the Russian Mountaineering Federation.
"They obviously don't appreciate the weather conditions and their capabilities. All our Russian groups, who adequately assessed, calmly went down and did not go. And the rest, including foreigners, who are quite experienced climbers, decided that they could handle it, did not appreciate their capabilities," Yakovenko told TASS.
He also called the incident a tragedy.
The request for help to the remaining climbers on the mountain became known on July 25. Eight rescuers moved to the place. The climbers climbed Elbrus on their own, without the involvement of a professional guide. Only two of them survived — Haris A. and Kemal V., born in 1983 and 1988.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that difficult weather conditions prevented rescuers from evacuating the bodies of two dead climbers. The Vedro Zenica climbing club, whose members were the dead, said that the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina were not tourists, but experienced climbers who went on an expedition.
