Russians will see the huge "Deer Moon" today. On July 27, Sergey Chumakov, Doctor of Sciences, educator, and teacher, told Izvestia where the name came from, why the Moon would not be unusually large, and how to observe it correctly.

"The phrase "Deer Moon" comes from the traditions of the North American Indians and is associated with the behavior of local animals and hunting customs, but has nothing to do with astronomy," the expert explained.

Contrary to rumors, the full moon in July will not be unusually large. The visual illusion of a huge disk is explained by the horizon effect: light from the moon passes a greater distance through the atmosphere, making objects appear larger than they actually are. According to Chumakov, this is a kind of mirage, not a rare astronomical phenomenon.

To observe the "Deer Moon", the expert advised to look for an open space with a minimum number of high-rise buildings. Even from the city center, in clear weather, the fully illuminated lunar disk is clearly visible to the naked eye. At the same time, a telescope or binoculars reveal few details, since the bright light of the reflected Moon "washes away" the relief of craters and mountains.

The scientist added that from an astronomical point of view, the July full moon is ordinary. The only difference from the others is the distance to the moon, which does not affect its visual characteristics in any way.

Chumakov also reminded about future bright events. So, in August, on the night of the 12th to the 13th, there will be a peak of the Perseid meteor shower. During an hour of observation, dozens of shooting stars can be seen in the sky, which impresses even those who are not usually interested in astronomy.
