- The participant of the International Mathematical Olympiad spoke about the preparations for the tournament
Andrey Shishko, a participant in the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad in Shanghai, told Izvestia on July 21 that preparation and selection for competitions is a long process that takes more than a year.
"It all starts with the All-Russian School Olympiad. <...> Then there are the May training camps, summer training camps, autumn, winter, February. Again, the All-Russian School Olympiad, again the May training camp. Following the results of the second May training camp, a team is selected. That is, it is a very long process," the student said.
The head of the Russian Federation's mathematics coaching staff added that the team was generally satisfied with the result, although due to the covid restrictions and sanctions, Russian schoolchildren did not participate in intramural competitions for a long time, which added to the excitement. He stressed that the training is ongoing.
According to him, all the current participants are eleventh graders, but the new students are also strong, and the staff has a whole year to prepare.
The organizers of the International Mathematical Olympiad announced on July 19 that Russian schoolchildren won four gold and two silver medals at competitions in Shanghai. Arina Prokudina, Andrey Shishko, Roman Kravchenko and Dmitry Grishko became gold medalists, Alexander Skvortsov and Maxim Bolshakov received silver awards.
