In Israel, crocodiles may be involved in prison security

Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir proposed involving Nile crocodiles in prison security in order to make escapes more difficult and save on security personnel costs. This was reported by the Heute newspaper on July 17.

"Nile crocodiles can be used as a natural barrier around a maximum—security prison under construction," the article says.

It is noted that in order to implement the plan, the Israeli Ministry of the Environment has changed the legal status of reptiles. Under certain conditions, they will now be considered "wild animals raised in captivity," which will allow security authorities to keep them out of zoos.

However, animal rights activists are critical of such plans by the Israeli authorities. Experts emphasize that animals should never be considered as a "living alarm system." They require constant care appropriate to their specific needs and close supervision.
