The United Nations (UN) has condemned the torture of Russian prisoners of war in Ukraine. This was announced on July 4 by the Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia, Yana Lantratova.
According to Lantratova, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights had previously acknowledged the facts of bullying of Russian fighters in Ukrainian captivity. The Ombudsman noted that this indicates that numerous appeals from the Russian side have begun to bring results.
In addition, Lantratova sent appeals to the UN High Commissioner Volker Turk and the special representative of the Secretary General of the organization, Vanessa Frazier, demanding an international legal assessment of the new attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on civilians.
She stressed the need for the international community to respond to the latest attacks targeting civilian targets. Among them, Lantratova noted attacks on a Belarusian passenger bus in the Bryansk region, urban transport in Lisichansk, and a strike on a market in Tokmak, Zaporizhia region. In addition, she noted the bombing of a car in Kursky Rylsk.
"I ask international structures to condemn these crimes, ensure independent monitoring and bring the perpetrators to justice. At the same time, I ask you to expand efforts to protect prisoners and to reunite families as soon as possible, as well as to strengthen humanitarian assistance to the victims," the Ombudsman wrote in her Telegram channel.
On July 3, Turk called on the Ukrainian authorities to immediately stop torturing Russian prisoners of war. He said that about half of the prisoners captured by Ukraine, who were interviewed by the staff of his department, told about torture or ill-treatment. According to Turk, such cases occur mainly in temporary detention facilities before prisoners are transferred to official detention facilities.
