Russian striker Alexander Ovechkin has signed a new one-year contract with the National Hockey League (NHL) club Washington Capitals. This was announced by the club's press service on July 2.

Ovechkin has been playing for Washington since 2005 and is the best sniper in the history of the NHL regular season. Over the years of his career, he has repeatedly won individual league awards, and in the 2017/18 season he led the team to its first ever Stanley Cup victory.

The contract extension will allow the 39-year-old forward to continue playing for the club at least until the end of the next NHL season.
