The decision of the Israeli government to recognize the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire is unexpected, Caucasian scholar Artur Atayev said in an interview with Izvestia. According to the expert, this topic has been discussed in the country for a long time, but it did not go beyond conversations.

"The fact is that the Israeli authorities believed that it was the Jewish people who had a kind of monopoly on the topic of genocide. Now, apparently, the irritation is directed at [Turkish President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan got to such an extent that it was decided to lift this taboo," he admitted.

One of the results, according to the source, will be the deterioration of relations between Israel and Azerbaijan. For a long time, these countries have been closely cooperating, but now there may be a cooling off.

Earlier, the Israeli government approved a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire. The country's foreign minister, Gideon Saar, then said that "it's never too late to do the right thing." According to him, Israel joins 32 countries that have fulfilled their moral duty by recognizing the historical truth.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry called the decision politically motivated. "The Israeli government, which systematically persecutes the Palestinian people in front of the eyes of the whole world and has been brought before the International Criminal Court for the genocide of the Gazans, seeks to conceal its own crimes," the statement said. The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has already provided support to Ankara.
