- The capacity of Paks NPP in Hungary will be temporarily reduced due to heating of water in the Danube
The capacity of Hungary's only Paks nuclear power plant will be temporarily reduced due to the extreme heat that causes the temperature of the water in the Danube. The government announced this on June 28.
"Due to the heat, the temperature of the water in the Danube, which cools the Paks NPP, is also rising, therefore, on Saturday afternoon, the power generation by the reactors was reduced by 240 MW. On Sunday, it is expected that electricity production will have to be reduced by another 320 MW," the government said in a statement on its website.
It is noted that reducing the capacity will still ensure the demand for electricity.
On June 23, Le Parisien reported that the French nuclear power plant Golfesh had completely shut down its reactors due to critical heating of the water in the Garonne River. The energy company EDF made this decision due to the strong heating of the reservoir, which is used for cooling systems. It was expected that the water would warm up to the maximum allowable temperature of 28 degrees. The situation is aggravated by the fact that the country is facing unprecedented temperature figures. Meteorologists have recorded the warmest night in the history of observations since 1947.
