National Hockey League (NHL) Club Washington Capitals intends to release part of the salary cap limit in order to continue cooperation with Alexander Ovechkin. This was reported by journalist Elliott Friedman on June 25.
"Regarding the future of Ovechkin and the Capitals, I think they will probably take one or two more steps to free up some space under the salary cap and ensure that they can keep it," Friedman was quoted by the NHL Rumour Report on the social network X.
Ovechkin turned 40 years old. The 2025/26 season was the 21st in the NHL for the hockey player and the final one under the current contract with Washington. At the same time, Ovechkin has been playing for this team since the very beginning of his career in the league.
Brian McLellan, President of hockey Operations for the Washington Capitals, announced on April 20 that Ovechkin has a tremendous impact on the team.
