- The political scientist appreciated the departure of Starmer from the post of Prime Minister of Great Britain
Ivan Pyatibratov, an associate professor at the Financial University and a leading analyst at the Center for Political Information, assessed Keir Starmer's departure from the post of British Prime Minister and told who could succeed him.
In an interview with the Mail News on Monday, June 22, he noted that a possible replacement for Starmer had long been discussed in the Labor Party. Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, was named as one of the most likely successors.
"Andy Burnham gave up his high—ranking post to enter the British parliament precisely in order to compete with Keir Starmer within the Labor Party," the expert said.
According to him, Burnham remains an experienced politician with high recognition and noticeable support from voters. Against the background of the growing popularity of Nigel Farage's Reform UK party, he managed to show a strong political result.
Pyatibratov identified two scenarios for the development of events. The first involves full-fledged internal party elections for a new leader, in which Burnham can become one of the main candidates. The second option is a faster transfer of power within the party if the politician gets enough support from his party members.
According to the analyst, the Labor Party is more likely to choose a less risky option of changing the leader, so as not to strengthen the position of opponents.
At the same time, the expert expressed the opinion that Burnham's possible rise to power would not lead to significant changes in Britain's relations with Russia. According to him, London will continue to adhere to the current course. Pyatibratov also admitted that under the new prime minister, certain parameters of defense policy may change, but Ukraine's support, in his opinion, will remain.
On the same day, the British prime minister announced that he would leave the post of leader of the ruling Labor Party. According to him, he informed King Charles III of his decision, clarifies 360.ru . In addition, he will instruct the National Executive Committee of the party to organize the procedure for electing a new leader. Acceptance of applications for participation in the elections will begin on July 9, writes RT.
Starmer has served as party leader since April 2020, and as prime minister since July 2024. He remains acting prime minister until the next government is formed, but Starmer clarified that he would no longer run for the post of leader of the Labor Party, the website notes. kp.ru .
On the same day, international political scientist Vadim Trukhachev, in an interview with Regnum News agency, stated that Starmer "is not at all suitable for leading a large and influential country. Just like a whole galaxy of his predecessors." According to him, 70% of the population have a negative attitude towards the current prime Minister.
