The Russian Foreign Ministry announced the need for reforms in the UN secretariat after the change of the Secretary General.

The new Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) needs to correct the mistakes of the team of the current UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, including changing the existing imbalance in the structure of the organization's secretariat. This was announced on June 22 by Kirill Logvinov, Director of the Department of International Organizations at the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"The problem is that biased approaches do not allow UN officials to effectively mediate in resolving the acute crises of our time," the diplomat told TASS.

He stressed that the trust of the conflicting parties is a key resource of the negotiation process, however, in his assessment, it is being undermined in the current conditions. Logvinov noted that the future Secretary General will have to "correct the mistakes" of the current leadership, starting with the personnel imbalance in the secretariat.

"We should start by eliminating the dominance of representatives of the Western minority who have flooded the secretariat," he said.

According to Logvinov, a number of key positions in the UN structure are occupied by representatives of Western countries, which, in his opinion, affects the balance of approaches within the organization.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on June 8 that the new UN Secretary-General must be impartial, independent and committed to the organization's Charter. According to the minister, this is a key moment. The Russian Foreign Minister stressed that Russia must be sure that the new Secretary General of the world organization will not share the same position as the current head of the United Nations.

On the same day, Lavrov said that Russia was not against a woman heading the UN. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, in turn, said on June 4 that Moscow hopes that the new UN Secretary General will take into account the mistakes of his predecessor Guterres. The diplomat added that Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, maintains a dialogue with Guterres and will continue it to bring its assessments.

On May 15, Lavrov noted that the appointment of a new UN Secretary General, which is expected this year, provides opportunities for positive changes and "restoring order" in the organization. He also added that Russia firmly supports the expansion of the representation of states in the UN Security Council.
