A number of Western countries are trying to set up participants in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) against the Russian bid for the chairmanship of the organization. This was announced on June 11 by the Russian Foreign Ministry's Ambassador-at-Large for G20 and APEC issues, Marat Berdyev.

"Some economies are hostile to the Russian bid, and they are treating other members on the sidelines so that they refrain from supporting it," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

At the same time, he stressed that Russia has every reason to apply for the APEC presidency, since it already headed the association in 2012.
