- RS pointed to the risk of prolonging the conflict due to the expulsion of Ukrainian refugees from the EU
The European Union (EU) risks prolonging the conflict if it follows the demand of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and returns Ukrainian male refugees of military age living in Europe to their homeland. This was reported on June 12 by the American publication Responsible Statecraft (RS).
"In an effort to replenish Ukraine's human resources through the influx of [Ukrainian] men living in the EU, European governments risk simply prolonging the conflict and increasing the number of military deaths," the publication says.
At the same time, it is noted that even if such a scenario is implemented, Ukraine will not receive a clear advantage from recruiting such a category of its own citizens into the army.
"A short-term increase in the number of Ukrainian troops is unlikely to significantly change the course of the conflict, especially given the time required for the repatriation, training and deployment of a group of not too interested conscripts," the article says.
The head of the State Migration Service of Ukraine, Natalia Naumenko, announced on May 29 that Kiev and Brussels are in dialogue on the issue of a "painless and gentle" return of Ukrainian refugees from the EU to their homeland. The head of the migration Service also noted that Ukraine is interested in creating "all conditions for citizens to return" to their homeland.
