Italy announced Meloni's intention to choose a single negotiator from the EU

Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni calls for the appointment of a single representative from Europe in the negotiations on the Russian-Ukrainian settlement. This was reported on June 11 by the newspaper Corriere della Sera.

"The European Union should be ready to lead this dialogue, while it would be wrong to obey it. But for this, we need to determine who can represent European interests at the negotiating table," Meloni said during a speech in the House of Representatives.

According to her, it is necessary to identify an authoritative figure endowed with "the trust and mandate of all member states to represent the point of view of Europe."

"I continue to raise the issue of the need for Europe to initiate a common and pragmatic discussion of ways to interact with Moscow. <...> In any serious scenario of a peaceful settlement between Ukraine and Russia, various conditions depend on Europe, relate to Europe, affect Europe, and it is Europe that should negotiate on them," the Prime Minister said.

She called for help "to create conditions for peace by working together with our allies."

Meloni stated that this goal requires preserving the unity of Europe and the United States, as well as strengthening coordination between them. She stressed that the task is not simple, but necessary.

At the final press conference in Astana, Putin declared Russia's readiness to resume negotiations and assessed the prospects for ending the conflict.

On June 10, Finnish President Alexander Stubb announced that he did not see himself as a negotiator with Russia from the European Union (EU). At the same time, the Finnish leader stressed that Europe should start a dialogue with Moscow. According to Stubb, Finland or Norway could facilitate negotiations on the Ukrainian crisis "in the background."

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on June 9 that it was unacceptable to begin mediation by the European Union (EU) in resolving the conflict in Ukraine by imposing conditions on Russia. He added that so far Europe is "far" from the role of a mediator in the negotiations.
