- The media reported on the beginning of the protection of Ebola treatment centers in the DRC by UN peacekeepers
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), United Nations (UN) peacekeepers were involved in the protection of Ebola treatment centers due to the distrust of local residents in measures to combat the disease. This was reported on June 6 by Okapi radio station.
"In recent days, security measures have been tightened in Ituri province around Ebola treatment centers and medical facilities involved in combating the epidemic, both in Bunia and in the interior of the province. <...> Among the measures taken was the deployment of the MONUSCO Blue Helmets mobile base (UN Stabilization Mission in DR Congo. — Ed.) to Mongbwalu to help the security services," the publication says.
It clarifies that the main purpose of the presence of peacekeepers is to ensure the safety of humanitarian personnel, medical workers and healthcare facilities.
The Guardian newspaper reported on June 6 that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claims that the Ebola virus may be on a "dangerous trajectory" and risks matching the record outbreak of 2014. The CDC predicts that the number of cases could rise to 20,000 or more, depending on "how quickly infected people are isolated to slow the spread of the virus."
The Reuters news agency reported on May 27 that the United Nations has allocated $60 million from an emergency fund to help quell the outbreak of the Ebola virus in the DRC. So far, the outbreak of the virus has resulted in 160 suspected deaths out of 670 suspected cases of infection.
On May 15, WHO declared the Ebola epidemic in the DRC and Uganda an international emergency.
