The prospects for the coexistence of humans and robots in the modern world were discussed on June 6 by participants of the session "Robots + AI: what and where to learn to create the future?" at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2026).
Alexander Krainov, Director of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technology Development at Yandex, noted that when integrating technical devices into everyday life, many factors must be taken into account. He stressed that self-driving cars can already be used effectively, since the transport sector is strictly regulated, and modern cars are technically ready for autonomous control.
"Roads are designed for cars, and the real world is designed only for people. It is not very convenient for robots. And any real world, including the kitchen, is much more complicated than the road," Krainov said.
At the same time, the expert clarified that an infrastructure is already emerging in the urban environment that is suitable for the operation of robots. According to him, today people and technology can comfortably coexist if this environment is shared.
In turn, Sergey Kolyubin, head of the international Laboratory of Biomechatronics and Energy-efficient robotics at ITMO University, pointed out areas where human presence is impractical. He referred to them as "dark warehouses" (darkstores) and heavy industry.
"Why would a person be there? These are not very pleasant conditions — monotonous routine work. Or steel production — it's hot, it's hard, there are health risks," he explained.
Kolobin added that the robotization of such enterprises will require significant capital investments from businesses. However, such a transformation is justified due to the shortage of personnel and the need to remove people from hazardous production areas.
On June 3, new robots and anatomical structures printed on a 3D printer were presented at the SPIEF. In addition, indirect heart massage systems and titanium alloy products are among the new products. It clarifies that 3D-printed anatomical structures made of titanium completely repeat the patient's anatomy and are used for complex operations on the spine and skull.
