Italy announced the need to create a new alliance for the defense of Europe

It is necessary to create a new defense alliance to protect Europe against the background of the growing unwillingness of the United States to guarantee the security of this part of the world. This was stated on June 5 in an interview with The New York Times (NYT) by the country's Defense Minister Guido Crosetto.

"We must create a pan—European defense space. <...> NATO was created to ensure the security and stability of a part of the world, now we need an organization that can ensure the security and stability of the whole world," he said.

The source called on the 27 members of the European Union (EU) to form an alliance with 13 other non-member countries, including the United Kingdom, Norway, Turkey and Ukraine.

The Italian minister added that the North Atlantic Alliance, in turn, should look for new members outside Europe and North America, such as Australia, Brazil, India, Japan and South Korea, because "the world has changed."

It is clarified that this proposal is unlikely to be implemented. However, it underscores how seriously European leaders take American leader Donald Trump's efforts to reduce the American military presence in Europe.
