The psychologist gave advice on how to respond to the manipulations of superiors
Any manipulation is based on an attempt to control the emotions of another person, and the manager can use feelings of guilt, fear of dismissal, alternating praise and criticism, pressure from authority, or creating the feeling that the employee is not good enough all the time. Ksenia Solopanova, a practicing clinical psychologist, told about this on Tuesday, June 2.
"From the point of view of behavioral psychology, manipulation has a particularly strong effect on people who find it difficult to build boundaries, say no, withstand conflict, or separate their own value from the assessment of others," Solopanova said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .
The psychologist noted that one of the most common mechanisms is double signals. For example, a boss may tell an employee to be independent, and then criticizes any decision made, RT reports. Or at first he emotionally brings a person closer through praise, and then sharply devalues his work. Because of this, the employee ceases to understand what is expected of him, and begins to adjust to the mood of the manager.
"In conflictology, such a model is called creating an unstable environment," Solopanova explained.
The psychologist stressed that in such conditions it is especially important to translate communication from the emotional plane into specifics: record agreements in writing, ask clarifying questions, calmly discuss tasks, deadlines and criteria for the result.
"The most important thing in any work conflict is to maintain internal support and not to associate one's own value solely with the opinion of the team or the supervisor. It is the loss of inner stability that makes a person especially vulnerable to manipulation and a toxic atmosphere," Solopanova concluded.
Psychologist Olga Romaniv told on May 6 how to protect herself from bullying in the team. She explained that bullying in a team is usually not related to a person's personal qualities, but points to an unhealthy corporate environment where boundaries are violated and aggression becomes the norm. According to her, mobbing develops gradually — from inappropriate jokes and ignoring ideas to pressure and shifting responsibilities, which causes a person to doubt himself.
HR expert Garry Muradian, in turn, told NSN that in order to overcome stress at work, it is important to develop internal personal boundaries and learn to separate your perception from other people's reactions.
