The psychologist talked about the differences between laziness and burnout
Burnout is often disguised as laziness and loss of discipline. Ekaterina Catalina, a business psychologist and economist, told about this on Tuesday, June 2. She named ways to distinguish one from the other.
According to the expert, not every unwillingness to work indicates a weak will. However, if procrastination becomes constant, it becomes difficult even to arrive at the office, and concentration disappears at the beginning of the day, this may be a sign of overload or burnout. The problems begin when a person regularly cannot force himself to work: he is distracted by the phone, goes out for smoke breaks, and sways for a long time before simple tasks, the psychologist said.
She clarified that the World Health Organization (WHO) describes burnout as an occupational phenomenon associated with chronic work stress that could not be dealt with.
"Among his signs are exhaustion, psychological distance from work, a negative attitude towards her and a decrease in professional effectiveness. At the same time, burnout is not considered a medical diagnosis," Catalina shared in an interview with Lenta.Ru .
The psychologist advised those who are faced with burnout not to scold themselves, but to start looking for the cause.
"It is important to understand exactly which tasks you want to postpone: boring, frightening responsibilities, too difficult, or those in which a person has not seen the point for a long time," said the psychologist.
She added that some conditions, including endocrine disorders, can affect performance, so with constant weakness, drowsiness and a sharp drop in energy, it is better to consult a doctor.
According to the expert, the way a person rests also plays a big role. For example, if on weekends all the time is spent on children, cooking, cleaning and household tasks, then formally the person did not work, but goes to work on Monday without reserve forces.
"Laziness goes away after a pause, a change of task or a normal rest. Burnout does not go away for a long time: a person seems to be resting, but does not recover, loses motivation, gets annoyed, and gets worse at his usual job. In such a situation, the question is not how to force yourself to be patient a little more, but how to regain your resource and seek help in time," the psychologist concluded.
Earlier, on May 31, psychologist Alina Levina and development director of the Dela PR communication agency Yana Voronina told Izvestia that amid talk of layoffs and instability in the labor market, employees are increasingly facing chronic stress and emotional exhaustion. Prolonged anxiety affects not only people's well-being, but also communication and team performance.
In turn, clinical psychologist Marianna Abravitova explained in an interview with RT that the desire to quit after a vacation at sea often arises among those who have not had a vacation for a long time. According to the expert, such people have a reassessment of values, they see the beauty of life and feel the desire to change their routine. 360.ru .
