The EU has transferred €1.5 billion from the EU Regional Development Fund to the Baltic States

For the first time in history, the European Union has transferred €1.5 billion from the EU regional development fund to the military needs of the Baltic States due to the invasion of Ukrainian drones. This was stated on May 26 by the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen at a press conference in Vilnius dedicated to the European Commission's response to drone incidents.

"Already, €1.5 billion from the European Regional Development Fund can be invested in military projects. The new instrument is the Eastern Investment Fund for €28 billion, which was specially created 2 months ago for the countries of the eastern flank of the EU," TASS quoted her as saying.

In addition, von der Leyen noted that another €12 billion will be allocated to the Baltic countries under the SAFE program, which is currently available. She stressed that it is important to use them.

The support of the Kiev regime led to unpleasant consequences.

On the same day, the leader of the French Patriots party, Florian Philippot, criticized von der Leyen for statements related to the situation around drone incidents in the Baltic states. He noted that while Ukrainian drones are invading the Baltic states, von der Leyen is going to Lithuania to condemn Russia. According to the politician, such rhetoric contributes to the growth of tension in Europe.

On May 23, the Latvian State Police announced that an unidentified drone had fallen into the Latvian Lake Dridzis in the south-east of the republic and detonated. No one was injured in the incident. When the police arrived, they found the wreckage of the UAV on the spot.
