The doctor warned about the danger of May strawberries
Olga Tarasova, Associate Professor of the Department of Hospital Pediatrics No. 2 at the Pirogov University of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, PhD, explained the danger of eating May strawberries.
In an interview with the Health Mail on Monday, May 25, she noted that the strawberries of today may not be as safe as they seem. To harvest ahead of time, growers use greenhouses and growth stimulants, which causes the berries to lose some of their beneficial properties.
According to the expert, one of the alarming signs is the "perfect" strawberry, which does not spoil for a long time. Normally, ripe berries are stored for only one or two days, and if they remain dense and fresh for weeks, this may indicate chemical treatment to extend the shelf life.
Experts also note that in some cases, antibiotics, excess nitrates and pesticides are found in strawberries. This can lead to allergic reactions, poisoning, and with regular use— even reduce the effectiveness of medications. Substances that accelerate growth and protect berries from pests and mold are a separate danger. They can negatively affect the body, especially children.
The safest and tastiest berries appear at the height of the season — from June to July. To reduce the risks, it is recommended to thoroughly wash strawberries, remove stalks, do not abuse early berries and give preference to trusted sellers with quality certificates.
Infectious disease specialist Mariyat Mukhina warned on May 20 that eating unwashed strawberries directly from the garden could lead to infection with dangerous parasites. The doctor advised washing the strawberries thoroughly: first under cool water, then soak for 10 minutes in a fruit detergent and then rinse the berries again, the website writes kp.ru .
Andrey Tumanov, chairman of the Moscow Horticultural Union, had previously said that early May strawberries are not dangerous when it comes to quality products, RT notes.
Biologist Vitaly Polov noted on May 14 that children can eat no more than 150 grams of strawberries per day. According to him, initially the child should not be given more than two or three berries, according to NSN.
At the same time, nutritionist Natalia Pavlyuk warned about the consequences of excessive consumption of strawberries. According to her, people with allergies, individual intolerance or cross-allergic reactions should be more careful with berries.
Before that, on May 13, nutritionist Elena Solomatina said that when buying strawberries it is important to pay attention to its smell. The fragrance speaks of the freshness of strawberries and their ripeness. The tail should not be yellow. The berry should be uniformly bright red or dark red in color, notes 360.ru .
Earlier Pravda.Ru She wrote that the riskiest option is to buy berries from roadside ruins: sellers have no checks or documents. It is safer to choose markets and shops where you can request certificates.
