The Russian Oreshnik missile was impossible to intercept due to its speed and the splitting head. This was reported on May 24 by The Telegraph newspaper.

"This weapon, moving 10 times faster than the speed of sound, cannot be intercepted," the publication says.

Earlier, footage of an attempt by the American Patriot anti-aircraft missile system to intercept an Oreshnik strike spread online. Shortly after the separating warheads reached their ground targets, they were belatedly followed by one Patriot missile, which also hit the ground.

On May 24, the Ministry of Defense announced that the Russian Armed Forces, in response to Kiev's terrorist attacks against civilian infrastructure, launched a massive retaliatory strike, including the Oreshnik missile system, at Ukrainian military command facilities.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) attacked the academic building and dormitory of Starobilsk College on May 22. A criminal case was opened into the attack under Part 3 of Article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Terrorist act"). 21 people were killed in the attack, and 65 others were injured. The names of all the victims of the terrorist attack have been established. May 24 and 25 have been declared days of mourning in the LPR.
