A man died in a shark attack on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

In Australia, a shark attacked a 39-year-old man fishing on the Great Barrier Reef. It was not possible to save the victim. This was reported on May 24 by The Guardian newspaper, citing a statement from the Queensland Police.

He became the third victim of deadly shark attacks in the country since the beginning of 2026.

"Shortly before noon, an emergency call was received at the Hull River Heads boat dock about a shark attack on a man while relaxing at Kennedy Shoal. The man was pulled out of the water, but he died from his injuries," the report says.

At the moment, it is unknown what kind of shark attacked the fisherman. It is noted that blunt-nosed and tiger sharks are widespread in the Great Barrier Reef area. White sharks are also found in the warm waters of the shoals.

Currently, swimming is prohibited on the beaches of ten hotels.

Off the coast of Western Australia on May 16, a man also died after being attacked by a shark, becoming the second victim in the country since the beginning of 2026. The attack took place in the Horseshoe Reef area northwest of Rottnest Island near Perth.

According to the Australian Shark Incident Database, there are an average of about 20 shark-related injuries and 2.8 deaths in Australia each year.
