The submarine of the Russian Imperial Navy "Som", which sank more than 100 years ago off the coast of Sweden, must be returned to Russia. This was announced on May 23 at the Russian Embassy in Sweden.

"We hope that one day the Som submarine will return to Russia and become part of its historical and museum heritage, and the dead crew of the submarine will finally find their last refuge in their native land," the diplomatic mission's Telegram channel says.

It is noted that from 2015 to 2021, Russian and Swedish organizations discussed the possibility of lifting the submarine, restoring it and transferring it to one of the museums, as well as reburying the remains of the dead sailors. The fate of the Catfish was also discussed in 2019 at talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven.

The submarine sank on May 23, 1916 in the Aland Sea during the First World War after a collision with a Swedish steamer. There were 18 sailors on board. The diplomatic mission explained that cooperation between Moscow and Stockholm in the memorial field has now been put on pause.

The Pacific Fleet, during a survey of the waters of Peter the Great Bay on May 14, discovered a ship that sank at the beginning of the twentieth century. According to preliminary data, this is the steamer "Prince Gorchakov", which hit a mine in 1906 on the approach to Vladivostok. For many years, the exact location of the vessel could not be determined due to the difficult navigation area, fog and poor visibility.
