Russians were warned about fraud using the water shutdown schedule
Fraudsters use fake messages allegedly sent by public utilities during the hot water shutdown period, with a suggestion to follow the link to clarify the schedule of water shutdowns or "urgent meter checks," Alexander Aksenenko, Deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Construction and Housing, warned on May 23.
He noted that such links lead to phishing sites where attackers gain access to personal data and banking services of citizens.
"You need to understand that neither management companies nor resource supply organizations collect money through advertisements in entrances, chat rooms or links in messages. Any information should be checked only through the official resources of the Criminal Code, the city administration, GIS housing and communal services, or by calling dispatch services," RIA Novosti quoted Aksenenko as saying.
According to him, detailed information work with the population is necessary for the safety of citizens. People should be officially notified in advance about the timing of the shutdown and water supply, as well as understand where they can turn in case of violations. In turn, law enforcement agencies are required to respond promptly to the appearance of fraudulent schemes in such a sensitive area for citizens.
On May 17, Senator Artem Sheikin, Deputy Chairman of the Council for the Development of the Digital Economy at the Federation Council, reported on a similar scam scheme. He noted that users are asked to follow a link ostensibly on behalf of management companies or city housing and communal services, where they can specify a schedule for turning off water, but in fact, a person ends up on a phishing site that mimics the official portal.
There, he is required to enter a username and password from his account on Gosuslugi. Sheikin noted that scammers have become better at creating fake pages using copies of real resources and similar addresses.
