- The Prosecutor's offices of the Russian Federation and Belarus have identified tasks in the field of environmental protection
At a meeting of the Joint Board of the Prosecutor General's Offices of the two countries in Mogilev on May 22, Russian Prosecutor General Alexander Gutsan and his Belarusian counterpart Dmitry Gora identified specific tasks for solving problems in the environmental sphere.
According to him, the participants discussed issues of environmental safety of the Union State and developed coordinated approaches to solving common environmental problems.
"The Union State faces many difficult challenges today. These include the tasks of ensuring environmental well—being, which directly affects the quality of life of people and broadly defines the future of Russia and Belarus," Gutsan said.
He pointed out that the draft decision included tasks to facilitate the fulfillment of obligations in the field of world natural heritage protection, the implementation of the Union State's program to eliminate the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, as well as joint initiatives on waste management and biodiversity conservation.
"The issue of conservation of the nature reserve fund, waste management, elimination of accumulated environmental damage facilities, and reduction of radiation pollution requires constant attention," the Russian Prosecutor General stressed.
He added that this would be facilitated by the regular exchange of information on the state of legality in the field of environmental protection and law enforcement experience. A separate area of work is the harmonization of the legislation of the two countries in this area. At the same time, it is indicated that every year the Russian prosecutor's office identifies about 300 thousand violations in the field of environmental protection and environmental management.
In addition, following the meeting, the Prosecutor General's Offices of Russia and Belarus signed orders approving the composition of the Joint Board and its secretariat for 2027. Concluding their working visit, Gutsan and Gora laid flowers at the memorial chapel on Buinichi Field and honored the memory of those who died during the Great Patriotic War (WWII).
Russian President Vladimir Putin held telephone talks with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko on May 15. The leaders of the two countries discussed economic and defense cooperation, as well as talked about upcoming events on these topics.
