The court sentenced a resident of Cherepovets to 3 months of forced labor for publicly calling for extremism on the Internet. The Cherepovets City Court found a 49-year-old local resident guilty of publicly calling for extremism, who was sentenced to 3 months of forced labor withholding 10% of his salary to the state income. This was reported to Izvestia on May 22 in court.

A criminal case was initiated after posting a comment on a social network. The court found that in December 2023, the defendant, while at his place of residence, using a mobile phone and Internet access, posted a comment in an open community under a news post with a video.

According to the linguistic expert opinion, this comment called for violent acts — destruction by fire — against a group of people united along ethnic lines (residents of the Caucasus and Central Asia).

The defendant's actions are qualified under Part 2 of Article 280 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Increased responsibility for public calls to carry out extremist activities"). At the hearing, he partially admitted his guilt, explaining that the comment was an emotional reaction to the video, and did not pursue the goal of inciting discord. The court found these arguments untenable, pointing out that the guilt is confirmed by the testimony of witnesses, materials of operational investigative activities and the expert opinion.

The defendant has no previous criminal record and is characterized satisfactorily. The court took into account the partial admission of guilt, the state of health of the defendant and his close relative as mitigating circumstances. No aggravating circumstances have been established.

On May 20, the FSB Central Control Center of Russia reported that a resident of Krasnodar was detained for preparing a terrorist attack on a railway on the instructions of Ukrainian supervisors. The ministry added that the attacker spread deliberately false information on the Internet about Russian servicemen participating in a special military operation in order to discredit them.
