Military personnel of the units of the unmanned Systems Forces (UAVs) as part of the engineering and sapper unit of the Center group of forces used heavy Sova quadrocopters to disrupt the logistics of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) formations both in the rear areas and on the line of combat contact in the Dobropolsky area of the special military operation (SVO). This was announced by the Russian Defense Ministry on May 22.
As part of the combat mission, the Sova unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) carried out remote mining of strategically important routes used by Ukrainian units to advance reserves and logistics. With the help of spot placement of anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, the drone made it difficult for the enemy to rotate, bring ammunition and move equipment.
"We mask the mine in the summer — in green, or, if we know that we will use it somewhere in the mud, we use black, and in winter, accordingly, light tones," said sapper Sergey Smeshko.
The absence of a radio control channel makes the Owl invisible to electronic warfare (EW). Flying along a preset route and dropping mines autonomously ensures that the task is completed even in the complete absence of communication. Due to stealth, surprise, resistance to electronic warfare and nighttime capabilities, the enemy suffers losses.
The "bird" flies up to 50 km of the total distance, that is, taking into account the return, and carries up to 10 kg <...> loads," said UAV operator Sergey Gorskov.
On May 21, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that military personnel of the BPS troops unit of the 18th Combined arms army of the Dnepr group of forces, together with an artillery crew of 152-mm Hyacinth-B howitzers, discovered and destroyed the AFU UAV control point in the Kherson region. The gunners quickly aimed the gun and hit the target with high accuracy at the specified coordinates. The result was confirmed by the calculation of the Zala UAV.
