Para-climber Nabiev called his family at Maks after climbing Mount Everest
For the first time in history, Russian para-climber Rustam Nabiev conquered Mount Everest on one hand and immediately after climbing contacted his family through the national messenger "Maks". He announced this on May 21 on his channel on the platform.
Nabiyev became the first person in the history of world mountaineering to conquer Mount Everest using only his arm strength. The athlete made the historic ascent on May 20, 2026 at 8:16 a.m. Nepali time.
One of the most difficult stages of the route was the Khumbu icefall, one of the most dangerous sections on the way to Mount Everest. Nabiyev overcame it using only his hands and reached the first camp 15 hours later.
"It was one of the hardest routes in my entire climbing life. Several times I caught myself thinking: "I won't be able to walk...," the athlete said on his channel in Maks.
According to Nabiev, during the ascent, he repeatedly faced complete exhaustion, but continued to move towards the top.
"When you go to the top, the main thing is not to stop. Even if the wind knocks you down, and your hands no longer feel the support. I walked for the sake of all those who believe that the impossible is possible," he said.
After conquering the peak, the climber contacted his family via the messenger "Max" and shared his emotions from climbing.
For Rustam Nabiyev, Everest became the ninth peak in his sports career. He has previously climbed Elbrus, Manaslu, Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua, Ararat and Kazbek. In 2021, the athlete became the first person without legs to conquer the eight-thousandth Manaslu mountain in Nepal.
Alexander Pyatnitsin, Vice-president of the Russian Mountaineering Federation, announced on May 21 that Russian climber Rustam Nabiev, who lost his legs, had achieved a great achievement by being the first to climb Mount Everest on one hand. The Vice President emphasized that the paraathlete had completed the entire route from start to finish.
