- The infectious disease specialist named the reason for the unlikely spread of Ebola in Russia
Ebola probably will not spread in Russia due to the unsuitable climate and the absence of carnivorous bats. This was announced on May 21 by Ivan Konovalov, Associate Professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases in Children at the Institute of Motherhood and Childhood of Pirogov University.
"The spread of Ebola across the territory of the Russian Federation is extremely unlikely due to climatic, geographical conditions, and the absence of a natural focal reservoir of infection (carnivorous bats)," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
However, the source did not rule out the possibility of identifying so-called "imported" cases. At the same time, he added that all means are available on the territory of the Russian Federation to effectively counteract the virus.
On May 19, Russian Minister of Health Mikhail Murashko, following his visit to the 79th session of the World Health Assembly in Geneva, said that there was currently no risk of Ebola spreading in Russia.
Four days earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) had declared an epidemic of this fever in the DRC and Canada. Some time later, on May 20, an epidemiologist, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Onishchenko listed the main symptoms of this disease. According to him, half of the patients develop hemorrhagic rash and experience bleeding from the gums and nose. The incubation period is from two to 21 days.
