Rainer Braun, a German expert and former co-chairman of the International Peace Bureau, noted that since its foundation, Germany's policy has been shaped by the "image of the enemy in Russia." He said this on May 16 in an interview with the Berliner Zeitung newspaper.

"Russia can do whatever it wants — the West sees only confrontation. The image of Russia as an enemy has determined the policy of the Federal Republic of Germany since its foundation. Russia also no longer tolerates everything, which, by the way, is a sign of strength," he said.

According to him, Russia has the potential of a great power, and it must be respected as such. He noted that SPD politician and chief architect of the "New Eastern Policy" Egon Bahr and Soviet diplomat Valentin Falin had demonstrated how to do this. Brown stressed that if we do not return to this approach, Europe will remain in a stalemate of confrontation.
