In the Japanese city of Okutama in western Tokyo, a bear attacked a Russian man during a hike on Mount Mutsuishi. This was reported on May 17 by the local newspaper NewsOnJapan.

"A Russian citizen aged about 30 years was seriously injured as a result of a bear attack during a hike on Mount Mutsuishi in Okutama," the publication says.

After the attack, the bear disappeared. Its dimensions and other characteristics have not yet been determined.

Traps were set up in Okutama to catch the animal. Police continue to patrol the area. The authorities urged tourists to take bear bells or walkie-talkies with them during the ascents.
