- Putin signed a decree on special rules for granting citizenship to residents of Transnistria
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree that establishes special rules for residents of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR) to become citizens of the Russian Federation. The relevant document was published on May 15 on the official Internet portal of legal information.
"foreign citizens and stateless persons <...> permanently residing in Pridnestrovie on the date of entry into force of this Decree have the right to apply for citizenship of the Russian Federation <...> without complying with the requirements provided for in paragraphs 1-3, Part 1, page 15 of the Federal Law on Citizenship," the decree says.
The presidential decree simplifies the entry into Russian citizenship for the citizens of the PMR in the following points: they do not need to confirm continuous residence in Russia, have a legitimate source of livelihood and take an exam for proficiency in the Russian language. Also, Pridnestrovian military personnel cannot be denied citizenship due to their service in the departments of the PMR.
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu said on April 21 that the European Union (EU) is unlikely to take part in solving the problems of Transnistria in the current economic and political situation. The Secretary also noted that Europe has shifted the decision on the issue of territories to Chisinau. He added that the methods that the republic has chosen, namely financial and transport blockade, artificial humanitarian crisis and political blackmail, are unlikely to bring the country to the EU.
