- The head of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense announced the suspension of the rotation of US troops in Europe.
The process of rotation of US military personnel in Europe has been temporarily suspended. This was announced on May 14 by Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas.
"The rotation has been suspended to assess how the United States will distribute its capabilities in Europe," he said in an interview with LRT radio station.
The head of the Lithuanian Defense Ministry clarified that this is all the information that he and his colleagues currently have. He stressed that his country, as well as the Baltic States, as well as the Republic of Poland, continue to be exemplary allies of the North Atlantic Alliance and the United States. This position, he added, remains unchanged.
The Defense News portal learned a day earlier that the American side had canceled the decision to transfer more than 4,000 of its troops to Poland. The Tagesspiegel newspaper reported back on May 4 that the Pentagon was preparing for a partial withdrawal of military personnel from the Grafenwehr training ground in the German city of Filsack.
On May 1, political scientist Ernest Makarenko, after it became known that the United States was considering a potential reduction in the military contingent in Germany, explained Washington's possible intentions in a conversation with Izvestia. According to him, there are currently between 76,000 and 80,000 U.S. military personnel in Europe, and Washington-controlled nuclear weapons (NWS) are located there. In order to withdraw these forces from the territory, US President Donald Trump will have to make changes to the law on the military budget signed by him a year ago. The expert said that the American leader is simply trying to force the Europeans to support his soldiers themselves.
