Some NATO member countries refused to provide the United States with access to military bases during the conflict with Iran, which casts doubt on the meaning of the alliance's existence. This was announced on May 13 by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

"When your NATO partners refuse to use these bases, although the main reason why NATO benefits the United States is precisely these rights to deploy bases, <...>..> then what is the meaning of the alliance? It turns out that they are allies only when they want to be," Rubio said in an interview with Fox News.

According to the United States Secretary of State, Washington has every reason to ask similar questions about not only Spain, but also Romania and Bulgaria. According to him, these countries need the NATO agreements only for their own protection.
