- The NYT called the extension of the US permit for the purchase of Russian oil the end of Kiev's support
The extension of the US permit for the purchase of Russian oil shows that Kiev can no longer rely on Washington's help. This was announced on May 11 by The New York Time (NYT) newspaper, referring to Ukrainian officials.
According to sources, they arrived in Washington at the end of April to ask the American authorities not to renew the permit. Then the United States announced that there were no plans to extend it.
"After the administration extended the permit <...This episode emphasized that Kiev should not count on Washington's support," the newspaper writes.
The publication notes that the White House, when asked about the extension of the permit, responded with a statement by American leader Donald Trump about remaining optimistic about achieving a peaceful settlement in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
On April 22, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that more than 10 countries had asked the United States to extend the validity of a temporary license to purchase Russian oil.
Retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis said on April 19 that Bessent should be dismissed because he had violated his own promise not to renew the license for the purchase of Russian oil. Davis also noted that Bessent had made a mockery of the country by his actions.
On April 17, the US Treasury Department renewed the license for the sale of oil from Russia loaded on tankers until April 17. The permit will be valid until May 16. On April 15, the correspondent indicated that the easing of sanctions against Russian oil could stabilize the global fuel market.
