The media reported that NATO expects Trump to withdraw more troops from Europe.
The United States' European allies in the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) fear that Washington will not limit itself to withdrawing 5,000 troops from Germany and will continue to reduce its contingent in the region. This was reported on May 9 by Bloomberg, citing sources.
"US allies in Europe expect President Donald Trump to withdraw even more troops from the continent after he announced the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany," the publication says.
According to the agency's interlocutors, diplomats from the alliance countries suggest that Trump may announce the withdrawal of the military from Italy and a reduction in the presence in Spain. The possibility of Washington abandoning plans to deploy long-range weapons in Germany is also being considered.
Among other possible scenarios, sources cite the US refusal to participate in a number of NATO military exercises. In addition, it is allowed to transfer units from countries that have caused dissatisfaction with Washington to states that are more loyal to the American leader.
On May 1, the Reuters news agency, citing the Pentagon, reported that the United States would withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany within 6-12 months. It is noted that the reduction in the number of troops will allow the number of American troops in Europe to return approximately to the level that existed before 2022.
Austrian geopolitical analyst Patrick Poppel also noted on May 2 that the withdrawal of US troops from Germany is perceived very positively by many Germans, but Washington's decision may be a signal for Europe.
