US President Donald Trump has declared May 8, 2026, the official Day of the solemn celebration of the Victory of the United States in World War II. This follows from his statement published on May 7 on the official website of the White House.

"On Victory Day in World War II, we celebrate America's monumental triumph over tyranny and evil in Europe, achieved through the might of our armed forces and those of our allies. <...> By virtue of the powers vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, I hereby proclaim May 8, 2026, as Victory Day in World War II.", — the statement says.

Trump noted the courage of the American soldiers and emphasized the enormous price that the United States paid for the victory. In his opinion, it was the American troops who ensured the decisive success of the Allies over the Japanese Empire, which happened about four months after the unconditional surrender of Germany.

On May 8, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that in a conversation with Trump he discussed the joint fight against Nazism and Victory. According to him, in a telephone conversation, the two heads of state recalled that they fought against Nazism together and won together.
