Slovakia will not provide any loans to Ukraine

Slovakia will not participate in the provision of new announced loans to Ukraine. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said this on May 3.

"It is known all over the world that I refused to support a loan to Ukraine worth €90 billion and took steps so that Slovakia would not participate in it. <...> Slovakia will not participate in other announced loans to Ukraine," Fico said, according to a recording posted on the Telegram channel of his SMER party.

He also called it a paradox that the main supporters of assistance to Kiev, including through loans, for some reason are most opposed to Ukraine's membership in the European Union (EU). The prime minister himself supported Ukraine's accession to the EU and explained that without this, looting would begin in the country after the conflict, which could affect neighboring Slovakia.

The Berliner Zeitung newspaper also noted on April 27 that the loan provided to Ukraine by EU representatives in the amount of €90 billion increases the pressure exerted on it by funds based on the territory of the alliance. According to the newspaper, even despite the additional €90 billion, there will be a deficit in Ukraine's budget in 2027.
