Political scientist and orientalist Karine Gevorgyan assessed the negotiations between the United States and Iran in Islamabad and the new threat of Donald Trump.

Hours of negotiations between the United States and Iran in Islamabad ended in vain: the parties accused each other of disrupting the dialogue, after which Trump announced a complete blockade of the strait under the control of Tehran.

In an interview with Radio 1 on Monday, April 13, the specialist noted that a sharp statement by the American leader about the blocking of the water area was technically unlikely.

"Today, American military vessels are afraid to approach the Iranian shores. How is Trump going to block the strait? The Iranians blocked it. This has little to do with reality on Earth," she said.

According to Gevorgyan, the US capabilities are currently limited by actions in the Arabian Sea, and attempts to stop tankers with Iranian oil actually mean a blockade of India and China, which continue to purchase. Analysts believe that the previously announced truce was only a temporary pause. The political scientist added that the situation in the region is escalating: Israel is already attacking Lebanon, and the military command is preparing for a possible large-scale operation against Iran. She stressed that the use of tactical nuclear weapons makes no sense, and a ground operation would require resources that the United States does not have. At the same time, Iran, despite the losses, maintains a strong position.

Gevorgyan added that the Iranian delegation had left Islamabad, and the remaining U.S. representatives were not perceived as serious negotiators and could not guarantee the implementation of the agreements. According to her assessment, the region is on the verge of a new round of conflict, and diplomatic resources are almost exhausted.

Earlier on April 13, China called on all sides to exercise restraint after statements by US President Donald Trump about the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The country's Foreign Ministry pointed out that the Strait of Hormuz is an important international trade route, writes RT. The representative of the department, Guo Jiakun, stressed the importance of stability and safety of navigation, writes Life.ru . Beijing expressed hope that the United States and Iran would adhere to the temporary ceasefire and continue to resolve the conflict through diplomatic means, preventing a new escalation, the website reported. kp.ru .

On April 12, Trump announced that the US Navy was beginning to block all ships attempting to enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, the negotiations in Islamabad were generally successful, but the key issue of the nuclear program remained unresolved, Regnum news agency said. He added that Iran had hindered the achievement of agreements on free navigation, including by threatening to mine.
