- The British Defense Minister announced the alleged threat of Russian submarines to shipping
British Defense Minister John Healey said that Russian submarines allegedly threaten shipping in the North Atlantic. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on April 9.
"Any attempt to damage them (cables or pipelines. — Ed.) is unacceptable," he said.
Healy added that British forces and allies, including Norway, were monitoring the vessels. He pointed out that the submarines left the area of British waters without damaging the underwater infrastructure.
On March 23, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the situation in the oceans as a result of the actions of Western countries systematically violates the principles of freedom of navigation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated that the European Union (EU) coined the term "shadow fleet", which does not exist in international maritime law, in order to reduce Russian revenues from foreign trade. The ministry added that under this pretext, piracy actually occurs on maritime communications.
The Ministry stressed that all those who aim to turn the Baltic Sea and other waters "into the internal waters" of NATO and the EU should be aware that such cases of violations will be followed by an appropriate response using all necessary means.
