Laboratory-grown diamonds do not differ in their physical properties from natural diamonds, but they have a different origin and a more affordable price. On April 9, Anna Lisovets, the head of the product line at 585 Zolotoy, told Izvestia about this.

As the expert noted, natural diamonds are formed in the bowels of the Earth at depths of tens and hundreds of kilometers at high temperatures and pressures. This process takes millions of years, after which the crystals are brought to the surface by volcanic activity, mined and faceted.

In the laboratory, diamonds are produced using modern technologies that mimic natural processes.

"There are two main methods — HPHT (high pressure and high temperature) and CVD (chemical deposition from the gas phase). In the first case, carbon is placed in an environment with high pressure and temperature, simulating natural processes. The second uses a gas mixture from which carbon atoms are gradually "deposited" on the substrate, forming a crystal layer by layer," Lisovets explained.

She stressed that regardless of the method, the result is a diamond with the same crystal structure as a natural stone. According to the expert, from the point of view of physics and chemistry, there are no differences between natural and grown diamonds.

"Both consist of carbon, have the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), and similar gloss, transparency, and thermal conductivity," she noted.

At the same time, it is almost impossible to determine the origin of the stone without special equipment, professional diagnostic methods are used for this.

The expert also clarified that both natural and laboratory diamonds are evaluated according to the same international standards — the 4C system, which includes color, purity, cut and weight. The main difference between the stones lies in their origin and value. Grown diamonds are usually cheaper due to the lack of mining and logistics costs.

In addition, monitoring the conditions in the laboratory allows you to influence the characteristics of the crystal and obtain stones with fewer inclusions. At the same time, as Lisovets emphasized, this does not make them unambiguously better than natural ones, but only expands the choice for the consumer.

Ekaterina Fomina, stylist of the 585 Golden brand, said on March 18 that when choosing an engagement ring, not only aesthetics are important, but also practicality. According to the expert, the most popular material for wedding rings is gold, and this is no coincidence. Gold alloys are quite durable, resistant to corrosion and tolerate daily wear well.
