In Russia, more than half of new cancer cases occur in women, due to the peculiarities of the incidence structure. On April 7, Ruslan Basanov, an oncologist, surgeon, Candidate of medical Sciences, told Izvestia about this.

"Among the most common cancers in women, breast cancer is the leader, accounting for up to a quarter of all cases. Colorectal cancer, cervical cancer, uterine body and ovarian cancer are also often detected," the expert explained.

He stressed that the age factor plays a significant role. The risk of developing cancer increases markedly after the age of 50-55. At the same time, women on average live longer than men, which also affects statistics. An additional factor is a higher detection rate — women are more likely to undergo medical examinations and screenings.

Among the main causes of cancer, the doctor identified obesity, diabetes, lack of physical activity, bad habits, as well as hereditary predisposition, including mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Hormonal disorders also play an important role, as well as features of reproductive behavior, including late delivery.

Basanov noted that hormonal changes such as menopause or menstrual cycle disruptions directly affect the risk of hormone-dependent tumors, primarily breast and ovarian cancers. In addition, chronic stress, sleep disorders, and psychoemotional overload can also have an effect through hormonal changes.

"Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women due to the high sensitivity of breast tissue to hormonal changes, hereditary factors and lifestyle influences," the oncologist emphasized.

To reduce the risks, the specialist recommends regular mammography, especially after 40-50 years, maintain a normal weight, engage in physical activity, quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption, as well as monitor hormonal levels and treat diseases of the reproductive system in a timely manner.

On the same day, Andrey Kaprin, Chief oncologist at the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Director General of the Russian Ministry of Health's NMC of Radiology, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, reported that 54% of Russian cancer cases are among women and 46% among men. The ratio has not changed in the last 10 years. According to the expert, cancer is mainly detected in the older generation, and the average age of cancer in Russia is 65 years.
